moral conundrum?
On July 12th, I will have been with my company for 3 years. That whole time I've had the same laptop. Nothing fancy at the time, it's magnitudes less now. It has been mostly reliable and held tough*. *I should note that it is a Dell and my company purchased "Gold Support" with it. Over the lifetime of the thing, I've replaced the motherboard twice, part of the plastic casing, lcd panel mounts, and various other parts... It's starting to struggle with the power user load I put on it. The support agreement expired in May and I figured that meant I would get a new one. No dice. I begged. I pleaded. No dice. Apparently 5 other people were doing the same thing and a bunch of new hires were starting soon. So I didn't quality. I almost got to the point of pushing it off the table and saying it broke. But no, I didn't feel enough hatred towards the current machine to do that...yet. And besides, it doesn't pass the 4-way test.
Last week I miraculously got an email saying a new laptop was ready for me and I should reply with the address to which it should be shipped. Sweet!
Then I got another email saying that I should send my old one back ASAP so that it could be "re-tread" for the new hires. Crap. Are you serious? This POS? How crappy would I feel if I started with a company and they gave me a laptop that was 3 years old and suffering slight hardware issues that could blow up at any second? Sucky, eh? Should I protest? Should I have pitty and send the new one back? No. I like my new shiny thinkpad too much for that. I told my boss "that really sucks for the new person and I would hate it if it were me" and moved on. I'll get over it eventually. I'm sure they will, too.
